Tree Identification

My friend and I were walking in my neighborhood this morning, which is leafless except for these beautiful trees. They're pretty common -we saw at least 10, but we don't know what they are and the several on-line identification thingies we tried failed. So if in doubt, ask The Cellar -there's bound to be a few tree nerds on here! :lol:

I'm sure that this directive has come down from on high somewhere, because the children have taken it up first, therefore they are being systematically taught it. 2009 should be marked as the year this method has "gone viral".

For those of you without kids: when you are about to sneeze or cough, you raise your whole arm in front of your face, and exhale your deadly sputum aerosol into the crook of your elbow.

Origins of Life

If you can get HULA where you live, this 40 minute film, on the origins of life on Earth, is a must see. Much of the development, time wise, takes place in the oceans, and I swear it's the best underwater photography I've ever seen.

They do interrupt the film with a couple of 15 second commercials, but that was just a chance to close my jaw. ;)

Oh, it's got sex and violence too.

A couple of months ago there was a pole done amongst UK women to determine how long a female could keep confidential information to themselves.

The pole revealed that most british females couldn't keep the information to themselves for more than one to two days.

In real paper and/or online?

In paper, we get New Scientist and Lego Brickmaster, and also The Beano via grandma in the UK.

Also USA Hockey magazine and Splash -the USA Swimming magazine- both of which come with the kids' memberships to those organizations.

Online we get access to New Scientist that is a paid service for those who don't get the paper version. i don't really use that, though, not sure if beest does...

I just lost my purse with all my ID, my bankcard, friends' phone numbers and $200.00 in cash. I don't normally carry rhat mount of cash, but I had to get my prescriptions and I only have a saving account - not checking. I have looked everywhere. Every likely place and every unlikely place. I've called to see if I left it at a friend's house but to no avail. GODDAMN! I may be able to get sample meds through my doctor. I think my kitty can last the month if I give her smaller portions. I am so pissed off I could cry. I hope whoever found my purse has a good time shooting amphetamines.

Surprising Things

The longer you hang around the planet, the more things surprise you. Well, me anyway. Some people are more jaded, and don't have quite the same sense of child-like wonder that I strive for.

So, anyway, some things aren't surprising to me, like putting a man on the moon. The space program and I were born around the same time, so it was more of an expectation that we would succeed than a surprise to me when it happened.

I'm surprised, sometimes, by more conventional, simpler things.

Like the other day, I was reflecting on the relative impossibility of what I was doing ... brushing my teeth with orange-flavored toothpaste. I mean toothpaste is minty, or if you're really radical, you get the cinnamon stuff ... I still remember when Close-Up first came out with the cinnamon flavor. I thought it was really exciting. Okay, so I was around 10 years old, but at 10, other than minty is really cool. Now, at significantly older than 10, I'm amazed at fruit flavors in adult toothpaste. I know kids have had bubblegum and grape flavors for years, but grown ups, we're supposed to gaq over the minty freshness morning, noon, and night! See, citrus toothpaste really is surprising!

What about you guys?

(in case you misinterpreted the thread title, yes, I do occasionally sneak up on my lamps and yell at them as I turn them on)
