Bonaphone?

glatt 06-21-2006 10:47 PM

she's playing a PVC pipe. She's smacking the top of it with a floppy rubber paddle, kinda like a ping pong paddle.

wolf 06-22-2006 12:21 AM

Nope, and nope.

*ding*

Time's up ...

The correct answer is: Microphone Stand

Which is why UT got closest with "performed into a metallic pipe-like thing and micd at the other end of that thing."

He just missed the leap of illogic necessary for a wholly correct response.

But I will hit the tip jar in honor of the effort. Actually, I'll hit the tip jar because I want to, the response is just a handy excuse.

Undertoad 06-22-2006 06:45 AM

Try something easier then... What beautiful, tasteful Brit singer/songwriter only found success after Eminem sampled one of her songs... many years after it was originally recorded?

Clodfobble 06-22-2006 09:23 AM

Dido

But that song totally got airplay when it came out, at least around here... I was under the impression she was pretty successful before Eminem, though he definitely introduced her to a new demographic.

Name the popular 60s musician who has since retired from music completely, and now teaches high-level math courses at a university in California.

Shawnee123 06-22-2006 01:55 PM

Zappa?

Elspode 06-22-2006 02:14 PM

Zappa is, regrettably, deceased.

Shawnee123 06-22-2006 02:29 PM

Oh, I guess he isn't teaching anymore either?

Happy Monkey 06-22-2006 02:55 PM

No, he's still teaching. Maybe not higher level math courses, though.

Clodfobble 06-22-2006 04:06 PM

No, not Zappa.

And I've realized it's not entirely accurate to place him squarely in the sixties, so I wish to amend the clue to note that he was also popular in the late fifties, and mostly already retired by the late sixties.

Shawnee123 06-22-2006 04:16 PM

If I go to a "dead/not dead" website, would that be cheating?

Elspode 06-22-2006 10:37 PM

This *is* a pop performer and not a novelty performer, right? We're not talking about Tom Lehrer, I am assuming?

Clodfobble 06-23-2006 10:27 AM

You would be assuming wrong. I count Tom Lehrer as a fine musician! :) Elspode is correct...

Undertoad 06-23-2006 10:45 AM

Always check IotD -- Lehrer retired from teaching five years ago.

Clodfobble 06-23-2006 11:48 AM

Crap, I hadn't realized that! I suck. At least you're not telling me he died, I'd be really upset then.

Spexxvet 06-23-2006 01:55 PM

Peter Tork?

Elspode 06-23-2006 04:10 PM

Okay, I guess I get to do another one...lessee....

What did Tony Kaye do many years before becoming the late-80's/early 90's keyboardist for Yes?

Shawnee123 06-23-2006 04:21 PM

Taught high level math?

glatt 06-23-2006 04:38 PM

He attended grade school. ;)

Undertoad 06-23-2006 05:27 PM

Before he was the keyboardist for Yes, he was the keyboardist for Yes.

Elspode 06-23-2006 05:49 PM

...and in-between, The Buggles. UT wins!

Undertoad 06-23-2006 10:38 PM

You sure about that Buggles?

Elspode 06-24-2006 01:47 AM

Nope. I was confused. I will claim that I was still using mind altering substances in those days, and managed to confuse Geoff Downes' stint with Yes with Kaye's.

I surrender my music trivia question-posting rights as penance.

Undertoad 06-24-2006 01:54 AM

Well you've just answered my trivia question correctly.

But, if you're really surrendering,

Only one Elvis Costello song ever charted in the US as a single. Which one?

Ibby 06-24-2006 02:11 AM

Every Day I Write The Book.

...Either that or Allison.

Undertoad 06-24-2006 02:15 AM

Right the first time, well played

Ibby 06-24-2006 02:22 AM

this one's a double question; only ONE needs to be answered.

A.) What colour is Mick Ronson's guitar? Google Image Searching IS okay for this.

B.) What is the only style of guitar playing officially named after a person?

Elspode 06-24-2006 10:22 AM

Well, the pics' quality is widely varied, but I finally found a good shot of a blonde/natural finished Les Paul Custom, which seems consistent with most of the other live pics I saw (where I thought for awhile it might have been a goldtop).

Ibby 06-24-2006 05:33 PM

BZZZZT. Incorrect.

JayMcGee 06-24-2006 07:00 PM

b. django'esqe?

Griff 06-24-2006 09:04 PM

Slowhand Blues

Ibby 06-24-2006 10:44 PM

django'esqe isn't an 'official' style, and slowhand blues isnt named after anyone.

Elspode 06-25-2006 01:13 AM

Keep tryin', Elspode.

Elspode 06-25-2006 01:22 AM

I need clarification...is this the guitar you are referencing as Mick Ronson's guitar? If so, then are we talking:

1) Original color?
2) Replacement headstock color?
3) Color terminology dispute?

Clearly, I am not the Mick Ronson fan that you are, Ibram... :)

Ibby 06-25-2006 01:32 AM

Yes, the original colour.

Eric Clapton?

Ibby 06-25-2006 09:33 AM

Is his name Eric Slowhand?

jinx 06-25-2006 10:45 AM

From Spode's link

Originally it started out as a solid black 1968 Gibson Les Paul Custom

Laddie...you should have *said* "What is the original color of Mick Ronson's guitar".

Clodfobble 06-25-2006 03:39 PM

I thought the fact that he expressly allowed Google image searches made it clear it was a trcki question of some sort. Personally, I thought it was going to be something along the lines of "his is in a museum, he actually plays his friend's guitar in concerts..."

Ibby 06-25-2006 09:26 PM

No, actually, he's dead, so he doesnt do many concerts.

Jinx got it. It's a BLACK Les Paul Standard, with the top sanded down and revarnished.

footfootfoot 06-25-2006 09:45 PM

So is it too late for me to guess Flamenco?

Ibby 06-25-2006 10:05 PM

it is, but you're wrong anyway

capnhowdy 06-25-2006 10:14 PM

*fantasizes about multiple choice questions*

jinx 06-26-2006 11:22 AM

Ok. Describe the original/banned artwork for the GnR Appetite for Destruction album. Bonus points if you name the artist.

Ibby 06-26-2006 12:55 PM

Easy, the inner artwork, with the robot and the demon and the chick with the panties around her shins.

jinx 06-26-2006 01:07 PM

Right on, Robot Rape Scene by Robert Williams.

Was the guitar style named after Maybell Carter?

skysidhe 06-26-2006 01:13 PM

The meaning behind 'Led Zeppelin'? The name of the band.

Elspode 06-26-2006 01:26 PM

Isn't it Ibram's turn again?

skysidhe 06-26-2006 01:45 PM

sorry, I didn't read the rules, Passed over the rules or I'm an idiot or all of the above.

please continue:redface:

Elspode 06-26-2006 02:00 PM

I'm sure you aren't an idiot, m'dear. Myself, I'm not so sure about.

skysidhe 06-26-2006 02:11 PM

no , not you kind sir :)

Ibby 06-26-2006 02:30 PM

The guitar style in question is Travis Picking, named after Merle Travis.

Who played guitar in the song China Girl by David Bowie, who co-wrote the song, and why did David Bowie include it on Let's Dance?

Trilby 06-26-2006 02:36 PM

More importantly--how does Ibram know all this obscure stuff?

Elspode 06-26-2006 02:40 PM

Wasn't that Carlos Alomar?

Ibby 06-26-2006 02:42 PM

I know all this stuff 'cause music is my life. And at the moment it's manifesting itself as a Bowie fixation, hence so many bowie/ronson questions. I've got a few others up my sleeve though that ARENT bowie, so yeah.

EDIT: Not Carlos Alomar, no.

Elspode 06-26-2006 02:43 PM

No, Elspode, wrong!

Wikipedia sez Iggy Pop cowrote with Bowie in the 70's, and that it was resurrected and popified for Let's Dance.

I have no idea why it was included, though. Perhaps because Bowie was trying to kick smack at the time?

Carter-style picking can be thought of as a blend of rhythm and lead. It is a technique named after Maybelle Carter of the Carter Family, who popularized this style in the group's recordings in the 1930's. Carter-style is characterized by playing the melody notes on the bass strings and rhythmic fills on the treble strings. This lets the guitar perform as both a lead instrument and rhythm instrument at the same time.
