Sandwich Ideas

During the big one, WW II, many people went to work for the war effort who had never packed their lunch before.
Also many items were rationed or in short supply.
These suggestions were to help those who were bored with peanut butter and jelly.

So, that's where the Pimento Cheese came from. I have a love/hate relationship with that stuff.

I read it's a southern thing?

One ounce of pimento cheese has 37 percent of the saturated fat, 18 percent of the sodium, 11 percent of the total fat and 9 percent of the cholesterol that the Institute of Medicine recommends healthy adults limit themselves to per day.

Reminds me of a war-era cookbook that my grandmother gave me in 1982.

It has some commentary in the opening pages about the war and rationing. Grandma made notations throughout, and she wrote a few of her own recipes on the interior cover pages. I refer to it all the time, as it rarely lists oddball or hard-to-find ingredients - it's full of simple, hearty recipes for a limited pantry.

It also has a lot of quaint vintage color and black and white pictures of table settings for different types of gatherings - formal dinners, family lunchtime, buffets, etc. Just LOVE this book.

I guess other people do too. (Check that price! And this one - damn!)

Look on page 16 in that book and see if it's sandwiches.;)

I did! :D

The fonts and page arrangement are very similar, but my page 16 is a lesson on all types of flour and when to use which. Sandwich recipes are on page 831 through page 859, and the sandwiches don't match the ones in your image.

But if anyone is interested, I'd be happy to share the recipies for the following mouth-watering sandwiches from my awesome cookbook:

Soy-Cream Cheese Sandwich
Vitamin Spread Sandwich
Cheese and Green Pea Sandwich
Kidney Special Sandwich
Prune-Nut Sandwich
Carrot-Peanut Sandwich

Meta Given's to the rescue. I've got 30ish pages of sandwich recipes. Including Date Cottage Cheese, Checkerboard sandwiches with Tongue Filling, Fancy Hot Chicken Sandwiches, Watercress and Bacon Sandwiches, Bologna Sandwich Spread, etc, etc.

I searched Twinkie recipes. Big mistake. I may never eat one again. :yuck:
