Wow. I wonder how this went under the radar of nosey neighbors. I am always astounded by these cases -like the Ariel Castro case last year

From the Economist of 19 Oct 2013:
Quote:

TEN countries have three-quarters of the world's 30million slaves, according to the first Global Slavery Index, published by Walk Free, a campaign based in Australia and supported by philanthropists. ...

Europe's slavery rates are the lowest, but even in Britain, one of the lowest-ranked countries, the survey reckons up to 4,600 people are enslaved.

In Castro's case, he kept the women literally locked up in chains, in the basement, except when he was physically there to control them.

Other times, they make the women so mentally submissive and dependent on the captor that they are "mentally" chained - trained to never seek outside help or disobey in the slightest.
