Jan 24, 2010: The More Things Change...

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
The proverb is of French origin and was used by the French novelist Alphonse Karr (1808-90)... and ain't it the truth.

Here is the cover of Physical Culture Magazine, from 1937.

King Edward is gone, but substitute any other celebrity, and that, along with all the rest of the story titles, are eerily familiar today.

I love that they call it "The Personal Problem Magazine."

There's quite a bit out there on this magazine. This one (from Physical Culture magazine 1934) claims that Kelp-O-Malt tablets will cause a gain of 5 pounds in one week.

The ad goes onto read:

"New Natural Mineral Concentrate From the Sea, Rich in FOOD IODINE, Building Up Weak, Rundown Men and Women Everywhere.

THOUSANDS of thin, pale, rundown folks—and even “Naturally Skinny” men and women—are amazed at this new, easy way to put on healthy needed pounds quickly. Gains of 15 to 20 lbs. in one month—5 lbs. in one week—are reported regularly."

That's odd, because now they are telling me Kelp-O-Malt will help me lose 5lbs. a week.

I think things have changed, not stayed the same. My waistline: case in point.

toranokaze 01-24-2010 12:14 PM

But the ill contempt for one's own figure has stayed.

squirell nutkin 01-24-2010 12:22 PM

True, true. The waist is always thinner on the other side of the fence, or something like that.

WillieO 01-24-2010 01:25 PM

I've always heard that a waist is a terrible thing to mind.

Gravdigr 01-24-2010 03:16 PM

A mind is a terrible thing to taste.

OK. First off, I ain't eating nothing made from the head of a cow (or anything else, for that matter).

Second off, stop making me look things up.

Tongue isn't bad. I've had it sliced deli thin on a sandwich.

About this "sex crazing drug menace" ...

When my mum was a kid, growing up in post-war Salford, they used to eat (as a treat) sheep's brains, mashed up with butter and black pepper.

xoxoxoBruce 01-26-2010 08:57 AM

Your Mum was a zombie? :mg:

DanaC 01-26-2010 09:04 AM

*grins* yup.

It was apparently a common delicacy at that time in the North West. Probably particularly so in the poor working-class areas, where it was a cheap and filling treat.
