April 7, 2009: Easter Eggs

These are pretty cool and it turns out, easy to do.

Basically what you do is hard boil your eggs normally, and then, when they've cooled enough to handle, roll the eggs around on a hard surface to crack them. You don't want to crack them too hard - you still want the shell to stay on the egg. But you want to develop a nice overall cracked look.
Then Using cold water with food coloring gel, soak the eggs in the fridge overnight.
Peel them and receive accolades. ;)

they never are

Oh thanks. I'm going to try these for my nieces' Easter baskets! :)

edit: Oh, they're peeled. Not for baskets. I will try a nice display to take to my brother and sis-in-law's house.

MY chickens are easily impressed (of course they're a week old!) Cool eggs!

What's the big deal? The chicken who laid these is obviously a slut with multiple baby daddies.

:p

Maybe the Octochicken? :haha:

Hmm... I don't know what food coloring gel is, but it must not be the same as the old style fizzy tabs that you tossed in with vinegar. That would make the egg taste all nasty.

These would be fun to make deviled eggs out of.

xoxoxoBruce 04-08-2009 12:44 AM

No, not the same as the old egg coloring tablets... man, they were nasty. :haha:

Food coloring was liquid until they came out with gel, now you can get both. I think the gel is more intense.

Moms, are you wondering about food color cleanup? To remove colors from hands, wash repeatedly with soap and water. For countertops, use an all-purpose cleaner with bleach. Consult a professional for help with upholstery, rugs, carpet.

My egg making experiment is underway. Turns out I don't know how to hard boil an egg, correctly, so I referenced the internet but had to work it out with this recipe (the whole "don't crack the egg" and "you want the eggs to crack" conundrum.)

It will be a while before they're done...maybe about 6 more?

I hope it works so I can post pretty after-pics.

Shawnee123 04-11-2009 11:35 AM

eeek. I bet those bowls will be stained. Oh well.

Sheldonrs 04-11-2009 12:07 PM

When my urine looks like that, the doctor gives me Cipro. :D

Shawnee123 04-11-2009 12:11 PM

Luckily, for you or your friends, there are no eggs in your urine.

Did you read the link?

* Update * I was thinking that it wasn't a very food-safe thing to do - leaving the eggs out to soak in hot/warm water for 7 hours. In fact, it's not safe at all - it's a perfect environment for all sorts of bad little bugs to grow and thrive and contaminate everything. We didn't eat those left out eggs anyway - I just took pictures and eventually tossed them. Wasteful, right? So I made a batch and instead of soaking them in hot colored water, I used cold colored water and soaked the eggs in the fridge overnight. I'm happy to say it worked just as well AND you can eat the eggs!
I don't want anybody to get sick. :headshake
