Maybe you heard about this yesterday, or saw a short clip. Maybe not. I think this is a pretty amazing milestone.

Yesterday, this private company launched a US government spy satellite into orbit, and the first stage went back to a landing pad and landed. It appears to have gone perfectly.

At first I wondered why they're not using the upper part of the rocket to apply the corrective forces. Then I was reminded of the feeling I had when I balanced a broom on a fingertip. You've done that, yeah? You just keep moving the point of support a little tiny bit beyond the center of gravity, and the broom tips back to the center.

The Segway does the same thing, but in only one axis.
