The courting scene has changed, it's constantly changing. The goal remains the same but the circumstances and accoutrements have evolved. Think back 130 years when your grandparents or maybe great grandparents were sparking.

Maybe he wouldn't get married while out of work, so he went abroad... then another broad. and another broad.
Also, in the 1800s long distance relationships were doomed because with no planes everywhere was a sea voyage away.
Those shipboard romances are murder to relationships. ;)

Could be, although some folks in that time frame were illiterate, there had to be people who were semi-literate I suppose.
