Youtube channel recommendations

Bout time we had a thread for this :)) So here 'tis.

The video thread is great for individual videos - but what do we do if we want to recommend a whole Youtube channel rather than an individual video, I hear nobody ask.

Well, nobody, you post those recommendations here.

I'll start with 2 very different channels.

1. Beau of the Fifth Column (and indeed, The Fifth Column itself).

I frikken love this guy. I must have watched about 2 hours worth of short videos, and have yet to find one I haven't found interesting and thought provoking.

here are a few examples of his stuff:

About mistakes people make prepping for disaster survival...

More recently, about looting and state response in the wake of the hurricane

An appeal to Generation X

Good thread ma'am.

I follow a lot of channels that will minorly offend the lot of you, so I have chosen to highlight my least offensive recommendation. It's very American, so take that under advisement.

TheReportOfTheWeek is a young gentleman who dresses exclusively in old-style suits, parts and manages his hair with extreme care, speaks like an old-timey radio announcer, and reviews fast food items.

He's not funny; he's eccentric, and it's charming. It feels like he has chosen to go right along with his eccentricity, and it works beautifully for him. For example, he doesn't use his real name, or any sort of real name, he just refers to himself as "The Report of the Week" which is oddly satisfying.

In this new era of YouTube celebs, here is one that nobody saw coming. I like that part about our new media landscape. Never in a million billion years would the old media have given this cat air time. But he found an audience.

This, right here, is why I love youtube.

One of my favourite channels is Blind Wave. A group of RL friends who started a website commenting on the various things they enjoy, which then turned into a Youtube channel, with gaming, reactions, original content, cooking shows, podcast etc etc. Some stuff it's all of them, some stuff will have different pairings, or trios.

With Youtube revenue and patreon support they've managed to get a little studio set up, and they have a regular audience - I watched their Game of Thrrones reactions, and there were people sending in gifts to go on the desk during reactions, that were serious GoT merch - like, how much does the official collection of full colour maps cost??

They've carved out their little niche, grown their audience and are doing all sorts of entertaining and creative stuff with it.

Frikkin awesome.

Also he is great - I am totally watching more of his stuff.

- I don't think we should be offended by a video channel. Or rather, I don't think we should be offended by your posting it. If we don't like a channel, we don't have to watch their videos.

I would just assume I wasn't the person you were recommending the video to :P

[eta] I sometimes wander through videos that are completely against my beliefs or opinions - it's interesting to get the other viewpoint - it's pretty essential if you disagree with that worldview that you have some understanding of what it is you are actually disagreeing with. And occasionally you happen upon a sliver of common ground, or something that makes you reassess your own worldview.

Well I did just finally hit the subscribe button on Nazi Pug guy Count Dankula. I don't know if I'm gonna stick with him... I don't know how far UKIP he is exactly, he went and talked to them, but he's funny, and representin' the free speech. And from here, to hear that deep Scottish accent really makes it more entertaining.

In this segment he tells the tale of Mad Jack Churchill and it's a fine tale indeed.

'archery and bagpipes'

Hahahah. That's fucking awesome.

I like his style. he's an excellent story teller.

Well I started down the Joe Rogan Experience pathway, and that led to Jordan Peterson and the entire Intellectual Dark Web.

Former professional attention whore and addict Russell Brand is changing his profession to Deep Thinker; sometimes he seems overwrought and boring, other times it seems like he is truly onto something.

I subscribe to the Philadelphia Eagles channel, but I'm not offering that as a recommendation, except that the Eagles are the finest team in all the land, led by Our Savior, Ginger Jesus.

I have stayed a Jonathan Pie fan. For some reason, his is the only anti-Trump comedy snark I can enjoy. I think he comes at it from a slightly different angle than our doctrinaire left.

Woodturner 21

This guy is a 3rd generation production woodturner in England. He's been production turning for close to 40 years and you can see the kind of skill that only comes with thousands and thousands of hours of practice. Absolute economy of movement and sure cuts. 37 yrs x 50 weeks x 40 hours =74,000 hours.

His technique is astounding. It's so relaxing to watch. Some of his videos have the sound of the turning, which is music in itself, others have (or had) added music.

The guy is super nice and friendly, and comes across as humble.
