ETA: I had a twelve gauge H&R single shot about a hundred years ago. I bought it for a turkey gun. I shot three-inch XX Magnums through it. Hardest-kicking gun I've ever shot. It weighed nothing and kicked like a mule, worse, actually.

The kick is an inverse function of a gun's weight.
The stock-less 12 GA above would try to take your hand off at the wrist.

Nah. I've shot plenty of sawed-offs. You'll feel it, sure, but all that's required is a firm grip. Just keep in mind the "kick" turns your wrist a hinge.
