Help. New Computer. Windows 7. Dear God, Somebody Kill Me.

OK. Got new puter. Lived with Windows 7 for a week. Want to die. I cannot believe windows7 is such a turd of an OS. Seems like every program has umpteen windows, and EVERY SINGLE WINDOW HAS A DIFFERENT CONTEXT MENU. I almost gave up relearning Windows Media Player.

Really, though, the most recent thing to drive me from the room cussing Bill Gates at the top of my lungs (no kidding) is the fact that I cannot have an animated .gif desktop background. Oh, I can has .gif. But not animated.

Does anyone know how to go about this? Animated .gifs will only play in Explorer. Any other way and you get a still image.

I cannot find words to express how absolutely dumbfounded I am at the lack of functionality in Win 7. I tried to install printer software, and Win 7 immediately told me it 'has issues' with this software and the printer will not function correctly unless I download some driver helper from the manufacturer. Did it. The helper won't install, and the printer, so far, has printed just exactly like it did on the last computer, which means perfectly fine.

The 'file', 'edit', 'help' bar at the top of every program/browser I have ever seen, simply does not exist in sooo many programs.

Windows 7 is a GIANT step backwards. Windows ME is a gold standard compared to 7.

I wonder what's next from Microsoft? Back to text-based commands? Take away the mouse? Stone tablets and a chisel? You'll have to download a hammer. Hope it installs like it's supposed to...What a turd.:comp1::firefox:

That's why they call it a context menu. What's in the menu changes depending on the context.

I don't have 7, digger. But try something like this:

- Open the display properties dialog (right-click on the desktop and choose Properties)
- Click the desktop tab
- Click on the Customize Desktop button.
- Click on the web tab.
- Try loading your animated gif from here.

That section is to allow you to use a web page as your background. Maybe it will work for your animated gif.

The right answer is, don't have an animated GIF as your desktop background.

You don't want anything *moving* on your desktop, distracting you from everything else that is more important than wallpaper. Things are to move when they want to attract your attention for some reason.

I'll stick with my MAC BookPro. The price is worth the lack of aggravation. I will admit I do have Windows Vista Ultimate installed on bootcamp, only because the Army in its infinite wisdom refuses to acknowledge that Soldiers use Mac OS. So every now and then, probably once in 60 days, I log into bootcamp to take care of something there. As soon as I learn a bit more about scripting my own commands in terminal, this wills stop as well. Oh yea, there are no Windows PC in my household....wife uses a Macbook, and I have an IMac desktop that my boy uses for homework and games.

 I must be in the minority here -- I've been using Win7 for about a month, and I really do like it. Responses are snappier, interface is more intuitive... There was about a two-day learning curve, then I got used to it.

Yeah, but you're an ubernerd. That'll be weeks for the rest of us.

I got a new Dell laptop yesterday with Windows 7 and I love it. It took me a few minutes to sort out the lack of Outlook Express, but once I sorted out the mail program (which I think is brilliant now that I've used it) I had no further worries.

It's very much a Mac style system in some ways with the docking station and all. I quite like it and find it pretty simple to use.

Har.

ETA, good to see you back, Ali!

ZenGum 11-16-2009 11:44 PM

Ali!! Where ya been, mate? Is it worth its own thread?

Aliantha 11-16-2009 11:47 PM

G'day girls and boys.

Nope, definitely not worth its own thread. Just don't have much to say these days. :) (Mum always said, if you don't have anything nice to say just keep your gob shut, and I've just decided that that would be a good course of action around here lately)

I just felt i had to endorse W7 before it was any further maligned lol, and i commented on the humans thread because I think it's been an amusing topic. ;)

When I got my new laptop, they said I was eligible for a free upgrade to Windows7. My best mate advised me against. I'm glad I took his advice:P

I suspect it'll be kickass soon enough. But I had a nightmare with XP when i first got that (when it was very new) and I had a nightmare with Vista when I first got that (before the patches and upgrades settled it down over a few months). I'll wait for windows 7 to find its feet.
