What's stopping big Bertha?

But two weeks ago, a thousand feet into her near two-mile journey, Bertha came to a grinding halt.
Here's what I don't get. My kids watch this old show called "Popular Mechanics For Kids," which originally ran from 1997 to 2001. In one of the episodes, they do a segment on Big Bertha, including video footage of it up and running, so it's not like they were just profiling some future machine design that hadn't been built yet. At the latest, this episode was part of the final season in 2001, which would mean it's taken 12 years to dig 1,000 feet? What was the holdup?

Edit: nevermind, I'm dumb. I think the same machine gets moved from one construction site to another, and the video was from sometime earlier in its tunnel-digging career.

The UK Government has been telling us, for quite a while now, that it has been disposing of the National Debt. They didn't tell us how or where. I suspect all is about to be revealed

In my experience an unplug and reboot normally works.

Thanks to Ponce, the sign has already been made to celebrate it's 400-yr anniversary.

Sundae 12-23-2013 01:44 PM

I knew a chap called Grant.
He wasn't Spanish though. Or a ponce. Although he was a bit of an arsehole as I remember.

Bertha Pool

So we gonna do a pool or what? I know it could be something really cool like a locomotive or a tank but assuming they'll figure it out, my money is on slag (waste from smelting).

Clodfobble 12-23-2013 07:11 PM

I'm going to go with "buried shipwreck."

fargon 12-23-2013 09:01 PM

I think that it is an alien underground base camp, and the Klingons are watching us prior to the invasion.

Undertoad 12-23-2013 09:45 PM

I'm going with malaise.

Lamplighter 12-23-2013 09:50 PM

There you go again ... suggesting something silly

Why would aliens build their base in a pool of mayonnaise ?

.

Sundae 12-24-2013 03:40 AM

???

Is that "Error 47k" or license plate code for "a glacial erratic" ?

Griff 12-25-2013 10:53 AM

I was holding out for someone to explain it...

xoxoxoBruce 12-28-2013 12:24 AM

It's a diamond pipe left by a long dissolved volcano.

Sundae 12-28-2013 06:45 AM

Is that like a crack pipe for the debauched dissolute?

Undertoad 01-17-2014 09:18 PM

While we weren't paying attention this was solved.
