I remember when the Pledge of allegiance was changed. We recited it every day.
I Pledge Allegiance
to the flag
of the United States of America
and to the Republic
for which it stands,
one Nation
under God,
indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all.
There was a pause after each line so each line was free standing. Therefore when "under God" was added it was a freestanding line also. Some said it, some didn't, nobody cared.
