When the light turns green, 1 car length is more than sufficient margin of safety, until you're through the intersection. After the intersection, if the speed increases, you may increase that margin until you're comfortable. BUT you may not leave 5 car lengths between you and the car ahead before you start because that will make 3 cars miss the light.....asshole.
