Mari - I think you did exactly the right thing by basically letting them both know that you will not be involved in any behind the back crap.
I have had to deal with that for years at my workplace. Employee A has a beef with employee B (yet they are completely civil to each other on the surface) and since I am neutral ground, I get the emails from both of them bashing each other. I'm like the net on a ping pong table.
You should stick to your guns and refuse to talk about anything that can't be discussed openly between all parties.
