American Conservatism

I lifted this from the webpage of a new conservative magazine called The American Conservative. here

A biweekly magazine edited by
Pat Buchanan and Taki Theodoracopulos

Our aim is to rekindle within the conservative movement and the Republican Party the necessary debates on the key questions of patriotism versus globalism, prudent realism versus reckless interventionism. We take to heart the idea that the United States should be “A Republic, Not an Empire;” we believe the United States should slow down its rate of immigration; we are skeptical about many of the benefits promised by the new gods of the global economy.

We believe the leaders of the conservative movement have lost touch with the majority of Americans, who agree with us on these issues. We believe there is a large audience of intelligent, thoughtful conservatives who will passionately support a magazine devoted to traditional conservatism – ideals and values with deep roots in America’s history. At present, these people have no magazine of their own. The American Conservative will be that magazine.

Join us as we debate the future of America.

I wish them well. The Republican Party needs to be about more than militarism and corporate capitalism. I'd like to see a conservative discussion about what constitutes free trade addressing subsidies and the like. I have my doubts about Buchanan, however, since his man Nixon was into wage and price controls, but he occasionally nails down the truth. Taki strikes me as an entertaining blowhard but I've never read a serious piece by him. It would be refreshing to hear conservatives honestly debate the role of government instead of complaining about the big government Democrats until they gain power and immediately start throwing piles of money at defense contractors and starting new cabinet positions.
