I say expensive in comparing Regional Rail to the El/Bus. Although, I have dealt with Maryland's MARC system (from DC to Baltimore). The prices are pretty reasonable (5.50 from Union Station DC to Baltimore's Inner Harbor), although the trains aren't as nice, and MARC doesn't run on weekends.
