Think thats' to stop the creepy-crawlies eating their way through it and rendering it ineffective - only guessing, though.
We burn pine in our wood-burning stove - as long as it's reasonably seasioned it doesn't give that much trouble in samll quantities - not enough anyway to worry about clogging the stack. Otehrwise the chimenea route suggested by Elspode sounds a good alternative.
