Betelnut has to be chewed with lime to create the vampire look . It is chewed and then spat out . I am told that the pavements on an island in Micronesia are painted red to make these splashes appear more aesthetic .
Cancer of the mouth and oesophagus is associated with excessive betelnut and lime consumption . The lime is the baddie , of course , not the betelnut itself . The effects are mildly narcotic ..... along the lines of kava I would say . It does not inspire violence , just a sense of relaxation with the added bonus of a scary red mouth .
