Since she alreadly knows how to do granny squares, she should catch on to the rest pretty quickly.
Crocheting is one of my favorite crafts ... I would be more than happy to help out. Knitting I can do, but prefer to avoid. I have a blanket I've been knitting for the last thirteen years (no exaggeration, but I may have underestimated the length of time I've been working on it. I take it out of the closet every couple years, do about two pattern repeats (8 rows) and realize "you know, I really hate knitting."
(A crocheted blanket of equivalent size takes me about two weeks, max. I can do a baby blanket in a weekend, if I don't have anything else to do)
I also have a great crocheted mitten pattern I'd be happy to share with her.
