I suspect it has to do with all the
blood that's soaking the ground in the general area. All those decades of absolutely pointless bloodshed has to be good for something, right? I suspect it gives the mud a cleansing effect. After all, they say a butcher's hands are always the cleanest of anyone's. (anyones? anyone's? whatever.)
