When you've got kids, and something comes up, isn't it better to be able to call the parents of your kids friends and ask for help if you've got an appointment? You can't do that if you don't know them, so that's why we've always made a point of getting our kids in the habit of socializing with their school friends as well as family. It just gives you so many more options when you're in a tight spot.

Sure, kids change your dynamics, force you to interact with more people and the government. Families in close proximity also tend to intrude on your life, whether you want it or not. Family is more likely to drop by, ask for favors, nag you into going places and tough to say no to. Of course that works both ways.... gives you people to drop in on, ask favors of and nag.
I've always found when it comes to family, 300 miles is about right. Too far to just swing by, or borrow a cup of sugar, but close enough to get there fairly quickly(4or5hrs), without flying, if need be.
