As far as I know, the money doesn't usually go to governments it goes to individual projects (though in some cases, such as the Tanzanian projects, they work with the government.)

There are clear and manageable objectives with these projects, such as attempts to halve the number of infants who die of malaria in a particular region, by supplying mosquito nets, medical supplies and additional community training on how to recognise danger signs sooner. The projects that benefit are in Africa and the UK, as well, so it isn't just a bunch of well meaning white westerners trying to sort out Africa's problems. For instance, one project provides respite for full-time carers, allowing them to have a break and a day out somewhere nice whilst their loved ones are looked after by someone else. Another provides specialist addiction counselling. But these are all existing projects which Comic Relief seek to help.

It's pretty much the only large charity that I am not utterly cynical about.
