For my upcoming vacation I just picked up Dr. Scholl's sneakers with the built in Gel soles (stupid commercial, good product). The funny thing is that I picked them up at Value City and they were the some of the cheapest sneakers there ($28).
Thankfully, no major sports figures endorse them.
One idea I have heard is to switch between different shoes so that over time the load on your feet is distributed differently. I'm not sure who scientific that is but some people seem real keen on that idea.
