This is basically the idea behind Carl Sagan's book Pale Blue Dot (the "pale blue dot" is a picture of the Earth, taken from the edge of the Solar system, by Voyager 1). Sagan describes the stripping away our layers of anthropocentrism, as our persepctive is changed by new information.
