His book titled Never Have Your Dog Stuffed is absolutely awesome. I respect him very much as a person now, instead of just a brilliant actor after reading it recently on vacation.

When I was in HS I had a huge crush on Alan Alda. I was a senior when the last show aired, and a bunch of us kids went to our history teacher's house for a MASH party. Anyway, my best friend at the time (she was kinda ditzy) wrote to Alda's agency (William Morris) and asked if he would come to my birthday party! I never heard about it and she never told me but some months later I got a big envelope from the agency (or, I think it said Universal studio or something.) I thought I was discovered! I opened it up and there was a pic of AA with the signature: To Shawnee (only my real name), Peace! Alan Alda.
I screamed like a teenager! In retrospect, he may not have signed it himself, but he seems like he would.
