I also know a lady with RA, who is in her 60s and on immunosuppressants. She gets very upset when she goes to specialist clinics and sees other people with her condition with deformed hands (and feet I believe).
She takes a shedload of drugs for various conditions, and spends one day a week bedridden, but is grateful that at least she can still walk and use her hands.
Although I admit I wouldn't know that if I didn't know her.
