From what I've heard, Philadelphia is on the list for a possible MLS team, though having lost 2 teams 2 years ago, I don't see them expanding for a few more years.
I still follow DC United. They draw pretty good crowds at RFK Stadium, and can be watched on cable. Rho and I won free tickets to see them in 2000 against the LA Galaxy. Easily the best sporting event I've ever been to.
The problem with outdoor soccer in the US (and we've had several leagues over the past 35 years) is that it just doesn't seem to hold the attention spans of Americans for too long--Americans want high-scoring games...they don't always seem to understand the awesome suspense and gameplay that comes from a scoreless game. But I sense the tide is turning. Outdoor soccer has been growing since World Cup '94, and with the large number of Hispanics in the US, I think it'll continue to grow.
