Before Google came around, I was a big fan of AltaVista. I have no idea what the first thing that I searched was, probably nude pictures of Cindy Crawford, but what really blew me away was when I was planning a trip to New Zealand in 1996 for 1997, and I was using the internet almost exclusively. We wanted to hike the Milford Track, which requires reservations. All the New Zealand travel books and brochures I could find from traditional sources had no more than a sentence or two with a phone number to call. The internet had a web site that had TONS of information about the hike including maps, pictures, etc. Everything that you would take for granted today. I couldn't find it by going to the library or a book store or a travel agency, but the internet had it all.
