I've put a new screen on a Dell Latitude D610. It's not hard to do at all and will take you about 1-2 hours to do. You can get the screen on eBay for about $200, and get a good screwdriver set from Radio Shack for $15-$20 that will have all the bits you need.

Take my advice and get the 1400*1050 screen. You'll thank me later
