I commented earlier that they looked like the terrapins I had as a kid...not realising that, other than one particular type which is terrapin to you as well, what we call terrapins you call turtles. Mine had red ears. They were probably the same kind as yours.
I checked on wiki and it says you also use 'turtle' or 'box turtle' for what we call tortoises. I didn't know that.
