You could be right, Sam. In the past poverty limited pets to a very few families, but as more people have the means, pets are now an option.
It's the same pattern that Europe and the US followed in the early 20th century. Cat's that couldn't catch their own food didn't last long, and dogs that didn't herd, retrieve, guard, or tell you when Timmy was down the well, didn't either.
