There is an NLP exercise where you have to go into a shop and ask for something that they obviously don't sell with complete conviction. For example go into a hairdressers and try to order a pizza. I had a disagreement with an NLP Practioner about the validity of the exercise.
So maybe he was trying a new spin on this, and just altering his accent so he could go back another day and not be recognised.
