I just found out not too long ago, probably on PBS, Lincoln wasn't supposed to be the star of the show that day. The featured speaker went on for something like an hour or two, and Lincoln was just supposed to put in an appearance and say a few words. Well that's exactly what he did, but nobody suspected those few words would be so eloquent, and powerful.
That's why you shouldn't show up late for a concert, sometimes the opening act steals the show.
