I went to Wales for my 30th birthday - ALONE!, because my lousy friends and family were all out of the country! I had real life friends then as well. Anyway, I had an amazing five days.
I stayed in Dollgellau at a 19th century family run hotel, so I could say I slept in the shadow of Cadair Idris (the Grey King). I spent my 30th birthday with a party of mountain bikers from Oldham who I met in the hotel bar, and let them teach me how to play pool (I actually know how to play pool, but men prefer it if you let them teach you something, especially if it involves bodily contact). And I had a gorgeous snog...
Where was I?
Oh yes - I fulfilled a long-held dream of going to Portmerion. It was wonderful. And somehow, despite its diminuitive size and all the tourists (this was July) it still didn't feel crowded, just... just... I don't know. Something odd tugged at the senses to do with size and scale. Great fun. Oddly, I didn't take my camera. I think I thought that it would make me feel more lonely. Whereas in these digital days I somehow feel less lonely if I can remove myself from the scene via a lense.
