Back in the poor student days a boyfriend and I were traveling in Florida. We stayed at someone he knew's house in Gainsville. Everytime the lights went out in the bedroom, we heard a scittering scurrying sound. It must have been a bijillion vampire cockroaches. I slept (sorta) up on a chair with my feet up for the night. Ick.

OMG, similar story. Years ago, stayed at a friend of a friend's home in VA. Forget about turning out the lights...you saw these fuckers in broad daylight and they.were.HUGE!!!! They scurried all around the front yard and porch...ugh they were just every damned where!
And when night came...lights ON...ALL NIGHT!
