Computer virus lets 30,000 “ugly” people join exclusive dating site

Quote:
A dating website that prides itself on matching only the best-looking individuals has deleted the accounts of more than 30,000 users after a computer virus accidentally allowed them to skip the site's screening process. BeautifulPeople employes a strict community voting system that only grants accounts to good-looking applicants, but the aptly-named "Shrek" virus changed that, letting new users skip the screening protocols and begin interacting with the "beautiful" people.

Dating sites like eHarmony and Match have gained popularity in recent years among people who simply don't have the time, and perhaps patience, to meet a potential mate by more traditional means. Virtual matchmaker BeautifulPeople takes this concept a step further, by screening applicants based on looks, allowing only the most perfectly sculpted specimens to join its ranks. Members who pass the test pay $25 per month to be matched with other hotties.

Once the virus was discovered, the site's managing director Greg Hodge decided that the only way to correct the problem was to boot the 30,000 less-desirable users from the site, stating, "We have to stick to our founding principles of only accepting beautiful people — that's what our members have paid for. We can't just sweep 30,000 ugly people under the carpet."

WTH? Who gets to decide what "ugly" is?
