For someone that claims math is not his thing, you explained the answer very well.

We started off with...

ROOM 1 matching up with PERSON 1
ROOM 2 matching up with PERSON 2
ROOM N matching up with PERSON N
ROOM N+1 matching up with PERSON N+1

and we went to...

Room 2 matching up with person 1
Room 3 matching up with person 2
Room N matching up with person N+1
Room N+1 matching up with person N+2

which leaves us room 1 free for somebody else.

Okay, I'll quit with the math, regular riddles are usually more fun anyway.
