Yes, close range is undefined, but most exchanges with humans take place within 12 feet or so.

Shot placement prob played a part. A gut shot animal can move quite a distance before going down. Anyone who has hunt game and had the unfortunate experience of knowing you hit something and lose it in the bush could relate. Given the tenacity of a Pitbull on the attack I would suspect unless he hit the dogs in the spine, head, or chest/lungs/heart, they could carry on for quite a bit. JMHO.
