Just up the road... I'm jealous. Maker's Mark is my special treat whiskey. I learned yesterday that Maker's Mark and Laphroaig have a "special arrangement" regarding barrels. The Laphroaig distillery gets/takes the barrels from Maker's Mark for their scotch. I learned that Maker's Mark includes an unusual step of letting the barrels air dry for three months which lets the wood shrink some, which in turn leaves more room for the scotch to seep into the wood more deeply as the scotch matures in its "big sleep".
