Most anything you needed a desktop for is now done with a laptop. Typical screen is 14 or 16 inches.
Netbook is more portable than a laptop, smaller, works better as a portable machine, and has limits.
If not doing serious work - if only needing communication and web surfing - then tablets are an acceptable alternative.
