I was going to suggest cutting that support like you say. That would look cool too.... But only if they are symmetrical and straight. ..
maybe use a template to get both cut aways the same, and then sand the edges, or use a router to put a nice curved edge on the bottom of both supports....
... Or just keep your tools on that shelf, lol. Anyway, it looks great
