I have friends who are the farthest thing on earth from anything you would call 'hipster' and they drink PBR.
Natty Light is the cool beer with some of my younger friends.
In college it was Old Mud Light (Old Milwaukee Light.) That was about cheapness, as is the case with the aforementioned examples.
I reckon for hipsters it's all about the irony, as jim mentioned.
Blue Velvet? Now I'm SURE my friends' love of PBR has nothing to do with hipness...there is no way they ever saw that movie.
