Now I'm leaning more toward axle bearings.

A dying axle bearing will make an unmistakeable cluck-cluck-cluck-cluck-cluck sound from the offending wheel during the turn, and will (unless it's about to fall out) clear up after the turn (straightening the steering wheel).
