The same happened all over the world with indigenous people. In England's memory it was Maori (New Zealand) and Aboriginal (Australian) children who needed to be taken into good, clean, white houses to be all civilised up and learn how not to respect the land.

Not that there was a colour-bar on deciding what children had to have done to them. Even the working poor could have their children shipped off for an unasked for jaunt to Australia/ NZ/ Canada/ South Africa (the so called "Home Children").

Facing a horrendously long sea voyage, to be greeted by strangers and kiddie-fiddlers and worked half to death. No, of course that wasn't the case for every little emigree, but talk about your disposable culture - we had plenty of kids to give away back then. A righteous god in a novel would have been all smitey and said we didn't deserve any more until we learned their value.
