Had people not used the confederate flag as a symbol for promoting racism, then it would not be a problem. But even the most racist state flags used that symbol to express their racism. We are finally coming to grips with that racism.

We have also seen people subvert other symbols or expressions for nefarious reasons. The term liberty and freedom have too often expressed conservative hate. We must eat Freedom Fries because the French were so honest about exposing the 'Saddam has WMD' lies. Right to Life is now how we keep women in their place. A defacto flag for racists is the confederate flag.

Maybe if they performed Neil Young's "Southern Man" more often, then it would be a joke. But without facts, the expression is only taken at face value. Confederate has become the cover word for racism.
