I've seen repeatedly, volunteer work like monster gets into is the most difficult, thankless, thing imaginable. When you're trying to get it done everyone is like, that's your thing I'm not involved, and/or you have no authority to ask for anything. When you struggle to finish it everyone is like, well you finished and it looks OK, but I would have... or, that's nice, no wonder it took you so long.
The ability of these people to walk away is testimonial to monster's powers of restraint over the urge to eviscerate.
