Last night I watched Coastal Railways with Julie Walters.
In one sequence she travelled on the footplate of a steam loco and, to her obvious enjoyment, played the first half dozen notes of
'On Ilkley Moor' on the whistle.
It's often referred to as Yorkshire's anthem and is usually sung in an almost impenetrable dialect.
There are a number of versions on YouTube, which leave something to be desired, but it has to be said that the better ones appear to have been recorded by 'choirs' in an advanced state of refreshment.
Any road oop, as we Yorkshiremen say. Sithee.
