I often have subtitles on - because I live on a main road, I find I miss lines of dialogue when lorries or buses go by. If I turn it up loud enough to hear it over the large vehicles, it's too loud for general viewing (especially background music).

Luckily we have a system called teletext here (don't think it's global) which you can access from any TV. Hit 888 and most TV programmes are subtitled. This also helps with some of the accents on American programmes. Without a Trace and CSI New York off the top of my head...
