Well, roots actually prevent erosion. Plus, if the trail gets too old or damaged, they close it off and make a new one. I saw a couple areas like this that were roped off where they were regrowing the landscape and there was a new trail - complete with exposed roots. The rangers will more likely bitch at you for going
OFF trail than walking over the exposed roots.
